Love is Toxic‘ was a standout among thousand’s of exhibits, 22 Art Fairs, and countless galleries converging throughout South Florida the first week in December 2016.

The tightly wound, four day celebration of contemporary and museum quality art un-spooled to the delight of 80,000 discriminating art collectors, guests and glitterati that attended Art Basel week.
A vast number of guests claimed they were sidelined this year by gridlock, a season of uncertainty and an atmosphere best likened to clown cars navigating a three ring circus. The good news is Stanford’s solo exhibit remains in the Shore Club Lobby through January 2017 by popular demand. Select pieces, including the politically charged piece, “In Who We Trust”, have also been installed at Macaya Gallery in the Wynwood Art District.
Stanford’s fourth annual solo exhibit at Art Basel did not disappoint the discerning art aficionados that sought him out. For almost half a decade Daniel Stanford‘s colossal renderings have emerged as a top selling draw at Art Basel. The posh populous discovered throughout the Shore Club Lobby a gauzy sort of curatorial diversity imagined by Ali Aliabadi of ArtCierge, a fine art leasing company. Also entrepreneur Eddie Bernstein’s conceptual collection of artist Cerj Lalonde presented a retrospective that spanned three decades.
Guests were treated to Stanford’s evolving mastery of a mixed media triad that includes painting, photography and encaustic wax. The most recent installation of his ongoing series ‘FascinAsia’ shows a depth of subject that traditionally was drawn from a quorum of curvaceous females, stallions and destination totems in motion with a palette of organic colours predominantly burnished copper, silver and buttery gold.
Stanford’s success speaks to his prescience in capturing cultural shifts from bling and glam, to transcendental consciousness to today’s fearful, frustrating and extraordinary times. Times that thrive on instant gratification and obscene consumerism.
At the forefront of a growing genre referred to as ‘Neo Pop Art’ associated with Damien Hirst, French Artist Patrice Murciano and akin to their predecessors Roy Lichtenstein and Andy Warhol, Stanford’s growing acclaim has landed him in the private collections of Rihanna, Snoop Dog and Rock Nation’s concert promoters.
A master craftsman and philanthropist, his ‘Gov Love is Toxic’ sequence resists in image and subject matter, an age of cruelly indifferent authority and the decline of everything.
Upholding standards of civility and diplomatic aplomb, as a descendant of Caribbean and Canadian educators and community activists, Daniel says with his inimitable calm, “I do not buy into the decline of everything, my raison artistique is to adhere to a standard of living that evokes passion, elan and compassion in equal measure.”
His craft evokes Renaissance & contemporary masters, think Caravaggio and Vermeer meets Klimt & Warhol, while drawing his subjects from iconic stars in the constellation of popular culture. Stanford’s growing acclaim boasts commissions from oligarchs to captains of industry who wish to preserve the beauty of their wives and daughters in acrylic and canvas.
In the sensual embrace of the female form he treats the body as a temple element; posed, fragmented and vaguely erotic. “His is a sort of sensual art that is at once unsettling and alluring,“ according to Subat, who graced us with a live performance at the Gala evening!
Overlaid with gold leaf, precious jewels, Swarovski crystals and poetic messages from Baudelaire, the calligraphy recalls that of Jasper Johns, Peter Beard, Rafael Mazzucco and the chalky tally marks of Jean Miguel Basquiat; if any of them had taken a class in Stanford’s finely-crafted penmanship.”

An intrepid traveler; his work has been exhibited from Brazil to Cambodia and it is a global perspective that informs and inspires his latest collection, ‘Gov. Love is Toxic’.
“Distinguishing between ‘fact’ and ‘fiction’ is a formidable challenge that often ends with life and death consequences speaks of urgency in his work. When asked why the departure from ‘classic beauty ‘ to a clearly agitprop perspective he insists, “Whether one falls on the ‘Right’ or the ‘Left’, Governments are, by their very nature, corrupting. Citizens must align with causes that put all people and nature on equal footing. We are at the precipice of a new era that finds living beings poised on a slippery slope into an abyss of darkness.
‘Art’ is ’truth’ in the Orwellian sense. “These are ‘times when if the past is erased, and the erasure is forgotten and the lie becomes truth’. “Je’refuse to be about that” he insists. Art is beauty, beauty should be in the art”.
